Introducing the Thrustpac. This little gas-powered gizmo straps onto the bicyclist's back and provides a thrust of windpower up to 35 mph. It uses about an ounce of gas per mile (roughly 150 miles per gallon) and is controlled by the coolest glove design ever--you simply move your finger up and down and the Thrustpac accelerates or decelerates accordingly. It ain't cheap ($899-$1999) but imagine the commuter possibilities. I wouldn't take it down a trail however.
